The artwork ‘CAN NOT’ is a documentation piece revealing the Internet response and behavior during the artist’s stay in Wuhan, China from March 2010 to June 2010. A “Computer Screen Capture” is adopted as an artistic medium which documented, revealed and expressed artist’s intention by showing various types of site blocking during web surfing, information and image searching. A controversial instant response from the browser becomes the main element of the artwork.
The piece is attempting to examine the political relation among Internet, Culture and Identity in a fast growing country here in China. Hong Kong, as one of the Special Administrative Region in the People’s Republic of China, under the policy of one country, two systems supposes to allow maintaining its existing rights, freedoms, economic system. Therefore, the freedom to connect every part of the Internet sites is still maintained even after 1997, the handover of Hong Kong from Britain. As a HongKonger, having lived in a city in Mainland China, these kind of “Forbidden Acts” triggered a stronger sense of discord and contradictory experience when compared to travelers, businessman and visitors.
Besides, the project also explores the possibility of employing the copy culture and “Computer Screen Capture” as an art medium. How can this medium be used in an art context and foster cultural reproduction? By using this medium, the artist desires to seek and uncover the truth and existence of Internet sources, and then to disseminate in a networked media via an online gallery. Perhaps, the ontology of art documentation has to be revisited. Associated with other medium like painting, photography and videography, this unprecedented medium can be a spontaneous & factual documentation and depiction.
Winnie Soon(香港）對和谐有著深切的感受，《CAN NOT》是艺术家於中国武汉短暫停留期间（2010.3-2010.6)的創作，真实地展示出她在网上搜索资讯或浏览阅读时的体验，实时地記錄了瀏灠器的回應以作为時間的引証。对于和谐，她没有提出特定的观点，只是客观地展示出她在浏览网页中遇到的各种”和谐”场景。该作品试图反映与探讨中国在這高速发展的年代，网络、文化与身份的政治闗系。艺术家的出生地－香港，作为中华人民共和国特别行政区，实施一国两制，五十年不变，允许保留原有的生活方式、权利、经济体制与自由。因此，自1997年香港回归以后，人们仍可在互联网連接至世界每一个角落，享受精神的开放与自由。作为生活在中国大陆的香港人，比起外来的消闲旅客和商人来说，”和谐”这个与众不同、矛盾的体验，令艺术家产生更为震撼、深切的感受。
